Welcome to my website dedicated to the buttons of the Austrian Empire up to 1918, followed by buttons from the Czechoslovak period between 1918 and 1989. Why did I create this website? And why, among the vast number of historical artefacts, did I choose specifically the buttons of the Austrian Empire and Czechoslovakia?
The answer is simple. This subject has not yet been comprehensively covered in a form that systematically brings together and makes available the existing knowledge in one place. I therefore decided to undertake its study and gradually present the results on this website.

The oldest Austrian buttons covered on this website date from the first half of the 18th century. At the other end of the period covered are buttons that remained in use until 1989. This website therefore traces the historical development of buttons over a period of approximately 260 years, from 1730 to 1989.
These pages may be of particular interest to researchers and collectors from the following countries: Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic and Moravia, Croatia, France, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Italy, and Ukraine. Buttons covered by this website can be found throughout these countries. Their distribution also reflects the extensive territorial reach of the Habsburg Monarchy and, subsequently, the Austrian Empire.

We strive to base the information on individual buttons on available historical sources, particularly contemporary photographs, paintings, old documents, uniform regulations, and fragments of various official decrees. The information provided for individual buttons should therefore not always be regarded as definitive. Historical research is an ongoing process, and every new find or discovery of a relevant source may bring new insights that refine or change previous conclusions. Our aim is therefore to ensure that the content of these pages continually reflects the current state of knowledge and is always based on the latest available information.

The website was launched in early May 2024, and its content is continuously being expanded and supplemented. New information is also gradually being added to the individual button types. By mid-November 2024, almost 700 types of buttons had been presented on the website. During the summer of 2026, the original section dedicated to the Austrian Empire was expanded with a new topic – Czechoslovakia in the period 1918–1989. My aim is to have this section largely researched and published by the end of 2027. I therefore ask for your patience. The content of the website is being added gradually, as new knowledge, finds, and historical sources become available.

These pages have also been made possible through the cooperation of people who have been actively and extensively involved in this field for many years and who are willing to share their knowledge, experience, and material from their collections. Their willingness to make information and collection items available has significantly contributed to expanding and improving the content of these pages. I would therefore like to express my sincere thanks for their cooperation, valuable information, and the material they have provided:

They are:

  • Šedo Milan - Slovakia
  • Kejzlar Martin - Czech Republic
  • Marie Rychtrová - Czech Republic
  • Florian Urban - Poland
  • Karol Przybysz Malczevsky - Poland
  • Karol Benkő József - Romania

If you think that any important information is missing, you have found an error or a broken link, or you have an idea how to improve the informational value of these pages, please let me know. :)
